The Mariano Nicolás Valcárcel district is located in the Camaná province in the Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district was founded on November 3, 1944. The district was named after Mariano Nicolás Valcárcel, a Peruvian politician of the 19th century.

The Nicolás de Piérola district has an area of ​​555 km². The 2017 census counted 6,997 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1730, in 2007 it was 4375. The district administration is located in the 338  m high town of Urasqui with 249 inhabitants (as of 2017). Urasqui is 82 km northwest of the provincial capital Camaná .

Geographical location

The Mariano Nicolás Valcárcel district is located in the far northwest of the Camaná province. The Río Ocoña flows through the district over a length of about 32 km in a southerly direction. Irrigated agriculture is practiced along the course of the river. Otherwise the area consists of uninhabited desert landscape.

The Mariano Nicolás Valcárcel district is bordered by the Atico and Caravelí districts (both in the Caravelí province ) to the west, the Río Grande and Andaray districts to the north (both in the Condesuyos province ) and the Ocoña district to the southeast .
