The Andaray District is located in the Condesuyos Province in the Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It has an area of ​​810 km². The 2017 census counted 711 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 762, in 2007 it was 719. The district administration is located in the 3050  m high village of Andaray with 243 inhabitants (as of 2017). Andaray is located 22 km west-northwest of the provincial capital Chuquibamba .

Geographical location

The district of Andaray has a longitudinal extension in the NNW-SSE direction of 93 km. In the north it extends to the 6425  m high Coropuna volcano and in the south up to almost 50 km to the Pacific coast . The district extends over the arid plateau south of the Cordillera Volcánica in the central south of the Condesuyos province. The Quebrada Chorunga, a left tributary of the Río Ocoña , flows along the western district boundary to the southwest

The district of Andaray borders in the south on the districts Ocoña and Mariano Nicolás Valcárcel ( province Camaná ), in the west on the districts Río Grande and Yanaquihua , in the north on the district Salamanca , in the extreme northeast on the district Pampacolca ( province Castilla ) and in the east to the Chuquibamba District .
