Walter Göpner (born February 16, 1930 ) is a former German soccer player. In Altenburg he played in 1952 in the GDR Oberliga , the highest league in GDR football .

Athletic career

Until 1951 Walter Göpner played in the youth league of the company sports club (BSG) Stahl Altenburg . When in the second half of the 1951/52 season the risk of relegation became acute for the BSG in the Oberliga, the player- coach Herbert Klemig tried to save the situation by taking in young players. Among the newcomers was the 22-year-old Walter Göpner, who took the place of the previous standard right runner Heinz Gerber . In this position, Göpner played the last seven game days, but the Altenburger were relegated from the league.

In the following four seasons Göpner joined the BSG, which had renamed itself after relegation to Motor Altenburg, in the second-class GDR league . Up to and including the 1954/55 season he was regularly used in the league games and missed only 13 games of the 75 games played. In the first two seasons he was used in midfield. When Rudolf Walsek, a new coach, came for the 1954/55 season, he used Göpner continuously as a right winger. Göpner used the changeover to score five goals in his 19 league games. In the fall of 1955, GDR football was played according to the Soviet model and changed over to the calendar year rhythm. In addition, a transition round with 13 games was held, in which there were neither champions nor relegated. Although fuwo reported Walter Göpner as a midfielder at Motor Altenburg in their preview of the transition round, he was only used in the last two games, initially as a substitute, on matchday 13 as a right winger for Walter Schellenberg .

The 26-year-old Göpner did not appear in the squad for the 1956 season. That left seven league games and 65 GDR league games.
