The Cayarani District is located in the Condesuyos Province in the Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It has an area of ​​1393 km². The 2017 census counted 3474 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 4692, in 2007 it was 3689. The district administration is located in the 3920  m high village of Cayarani with 492 inhabitants (as of 2017). Cayarani is 146 km north-northeast of the provincial capital Chuquibamba .

Geographical location

The Cayarani District is located in the far north of the Cayarani Province. The Cordillera Huanzo with the continental divide runs in an east-west direction through the district. The south is drained via the Río Chachas, the north via the Río Velille .

The Cayarani district borders in the southwest with the Salamanca district , in the west with the Puyca district ( La Unión province ), in the north with the Santo Tomás district ( Chumbivilcas province ), in the extreme northeast with the Caylloma district ( Caylloma province ) in the east the districts of Chachas and Orcopampa (both in the province of Castilla ) and in the extreme south to the district of Andagua (also in the province of Castilla).
