The district of Chachas is located in the province of Castilla in the Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district has an area of 1196 km². The 2017 census counted 1758 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 2306, in 2007 it was 1947. The district administration is located in the 3055 m high village of Chachas with 618 inhabitants (as of 2017). Chachas is 68 km northeast of the provincial capital Aplao .
Geographical location
The district of Chachas is located in the Cordillera Volcánica in the central north of the province of Castilla. The continental divide runs through the district. The Río Andahua drains the west of the district south to the Laguna de Chachas . The shallow runoff of the lake south to the Río Colca is blocked by lava flows. The eastern part of the district is drained via the Río Molloco south to the Río Colca. The north of the district lies in the catchment area of the Río Velille (in the upper reaches also Río Cayarani), a tributary of the Río Apurímac .
The district of Chachas borders in the southwest with the district Andagua , in the west with the district Orcopampa , in the north with the district Cayarani ( province Condesuyos ), in the northeast with the district Caylloma ( province Caylloma ), in the southeast with the district Choco and in the extreme south to the Ayo district .
