The Santo Tomás district is located in the Chumbivilcas province in the Cusco region in south-central Peru . The district was established on June 21, 1825. It has an area of ​​1905 km². The 2017 census counted 23,205 residents. In 1993 the population was 22,652, in 2007 24,492. The district administration is located in the provincial capital of Santo Tomás at an altitude of 3,660  m with 10,738 inhabitants (as of 2017).

Geographical location

The Santo Tomás district is located in the southwest of the Chumbivilcas province. The district is located in the Andean highlands . It covers the upper catchment area of the Río Santo Tomás . The upper reaches of the Río Velille (Río Cayarani) flows along the eastern district boundary.

The district of Santo Tomás borders in the south on the district Cayarani ( province Condesuyos ), in the southwest on the district Puyca ( province La Unión ), in the west on the district Oropesa ( province Antabamba ), in the northwest on the district Llusco , in the far north the Colquemarca district , in the east to the Chamaca and Velille districts and in the extreme southeast to the Coporaque district ( Espinar province ).
