The province of Espinar is one of thirteen provinces in the Cusco region in south-central Peru . The province, founded in 1917, was named after Ladislao Espinar (1842–1879), a Peruvian officer and war hero in the saltpeter war .
The province has an area of 5311.09 km². The 2017 census counted 57,582 inhabitants in the province. In 1993 the population was 56,591, in 2007 it was 62,698. The provincial administration is located in Yauri .
Geographical location
The province of Espinar is located in the Andean highlands about 150 km east-southeast of the regional capital Cusco . It has a longitudinal extension in east-west direction of about 95 km and an average width of about 40 km. The upper reaches of the Río Apurímac flows through the western part, its tributary Río Salado the eastern part of the province. Together they drain almost the entire area to the north. Only the lake Laguna Pañi , located in the extreme southeast of the province, flows over the Río Camaná (Río Colca) to the southwest to the Pacific Ocean . The provincial capital Yauri is centrally located in the province. The Tintaya copper mine is located about 15 km southeast of it.
The province of Espinar borders in the north on the province of Canas , in the east on the Puno region , in the south on the Arequipa region and in the north-west on the province of Chumbivilcas .
Administrative division
The province of Espinar is divided into eight districts. The district of Yauri is the seat of the provincial administration.
