The province of Canas is one of thirteen provinces in the Cusco region in South Central Peru . The province name is derived from the indigenous people of the K'anas (Cana).
The province has an area of 2104 km². At the 2017 census, 32,484 people lived in the province. In 1993 the population was 39,476, in 2007 38,293. The provincial administration is located in Yanaoca .
Geographical location
The province of Canas is located in the Andes , about 110 km south-southeast of the regional capital Cusco . It has a longitudinal extent in NW-SE direction of about 83 km. The upper reaches of the Río Apurímac flows through the western part of the province. To the east is the Laguna Langui Layo lake .
The province of Canas borders in the northeast with the province Canchis , in the southeast with the province Melgar ( region Puno ), in the south with the province Espinar , in the west with the province Chumbivilcas and in the northwest with the province Acomayo .
Administrative division
The province of Canas is divided into eight districts. The district of Yanaoca is the seat of the provincial administration.
