The province of Melgar belongs to the administrative region of Puno and is located in the south of Peru . The province was founded on October 25, 1901 as Provincia de Ayaviri . In 1925 the province was renamed to its current name. This was done in honor of Mariano Melgar (1790-1815), a Peruvian revolutionary and artist who took part in the Peruvian War of Independence.
The province has an area of 6447 km². The 2017 census counted 69,984 inhabitants in the province. In 1993 the population was 72,005, in 2007 it was 74,735. The administrative seat is Ayaviri .
Geographical location
The province of Melgar has a maximum longitudinal extent in north-south direction of about 95 km and an average width of about 55 km. It is located in the northwest of the Puno region and extends over the arid Andean highlands northwest of Lake Titicaca . The southern foothills of the Peruvian Central Cordillera cross the province.
The province Melgar is bordered to the north by the province Carabay , on the east by the province Azángaro and the south with the province of Lampa . To the west, the province of Melgar borders on the provinces of Canchis and Canas , which are part of the Cusco region .
