The Antauta district is located in the Melgar Province in the Puno region in southeastern Peru . The district was founded on October 25, 1901. It has an area of 655 km². The 2017 census counted 5556 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 6003, in 2007 4993. The district administration is based in the small town of Antauta, at an altitude of 4150 m , with 2991 inhabitants (as of 2017). Antauta is located 72 km northeast of the provincial capital Ayaviri .
Geographical location
The Antauta district is located in the Andean highlands in the northeast of the Melgar province. The lengthwise extension in north-south direction is almost 48 km, the maximum width 19 km. The rivers Rìo Antauta, Río Condorire and Río San Juan drain the area to the east and southeast to the Río Ramis (also Río Azángaro).
The Antauta district borders in the west on the district Nuñoa , in the north on the district Macusani ( province Carabaya ), in the northeast on the district Ajoyani (also in the province Carabaya), in the east on the district Potoni , in the southeast on the district San Antón and in the extreme south of the Asillo district (the last three districts mentioned are part of the Azángaro province ).
