The Ayaviri district is located in the Melgar Province in the Puno region in southeastern Peru . The district has an area of ​​1017 km². The 2017 census counted 25,057 residents. In 1993 the population was 23,281, in 2007 22,667. In the 3907  m high altitude provincial capital Ayaviri lived 2,017 22,247 inhabitants. Ayaviri is located 90 km northwest of Lake Titicaca .

Geographical location

The Ayaviri district is located in the Andean highlands in the extreme southeast of the Melgar province. The river Río Pucará (also Río Ayaviri) crosses the district in an east-southeast direction.

The Ayaviri district borders in the extreme south on the Palca district ( Lampa province ), in the southwest on the Vilavila and Ocuviri districts (both in the Lampa province), in the west on the Umachiri district , in the north on the Santa Rosa and Nuñoa districts , im To the northeast to the Orurillo district and to the east to the Asillo , Tirapata (both in the province of Azángaro ) and Pucará (province of Lampa).
