Ayaviri is the capital of the Melgar Province in the Puno region in southern Peru . Ayaviri is located in the district of the same name . The city had 21,859 inhabitants at the 2017 census. Ten years earlier the population was 18,881.

Geographical location

The city of Ayaviri is located in the Altiplano of Peru, west-northwest of Lake Titicaca . It is located on the left bank of the Río Pucará (also Río Ayaviri) at an altitude of 3907  m . Lake Titicaca is about 90 km away. The city of Juliaca is located 85 km southeast of Ayaviri.
