The Alto Pichigua District is located in the Espinar Province in the Cusco Region in south-central Peru . The district was formed on October 14, 1994 from parts of the Pichigua district. It has an area of 360 km². The 2017 census counted 2094 inhabitants. Ten years earlier, the population was 2534. The district administration is based in the town of Accocunca with 394 inhabitants at an altitude of 3990 m (as of 2017). Accocunca is 17 km east of the provincial capital Yauri . The Kanamarca archaeological site is 9 km west of Accocunca.
Geographical location
The Alto Pichigua district is located in the Andean highlands in the northeast of the Espinar province. The rivers Río Challuta, Río Calzada and Río Lorocachi drain the area to the southwest to the Río Salado , which flows west along the southwestern district boundary .
The Alto Pichigua district borders in the southwest on the Espinar district , in the northwest on the Pichigua district, in the north on the Layo district ( Canas province ), in the east on the Macari district ( Melgar province ) and in the southeast on the Pallpata district .
