John Jeffry Louis, Jr. (born June 10, 1925 in Evanston , Illinois ; † February 15, 1995 in Winnetka , Illinois) was an American business manager and diplomat who served as the United States' ambassador to the United Kingdom between 1981 and 1983 was.

Life

John Jeffry Louis, Jr., was the son of John J. Louis and Henrietta Johnson, heiress of SC Johnson & Son , an international cleaning, hygiene, personal care and insect repellent company . After schooling he made during the Second World War from 1943 to 1945 military service in the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) and was last lieutenant (Second Lieutenant) and military pilot. After the end of the war, he began an undergraduate degree at the renowned Williams College , founded in 1793 , which he finished in 1947 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). Following Louis was 1961-1968 chairman of the broadcaster KTAR Broadcasting Co . He campaigned as chairman of the Illinois Volunteers for Goldwater in the 1964 US presidential election for Republican candidate Barry Goldwater . In 1968 he was chairman of the board of the Combined Communications Corporation and at the same time a board member of the media group Gannett and, after the takeover of the Combined Communications Corporation, he was chairman of the board of Gannett between 1979 and 1981 . He was also temporarily a board member of SC Johnson & Son .

On May 7, 1981, John J. Louis was appointed to succeed Kingman Brewster as the United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom and delivered his credentials there on May 27, 1981 . He remained in this post until his resignation on November 7, 1983 and was then replaced by Charles H. Price .
