The Pichigua District is located in the Espinar Province in the Cusco Region in south-central Peru . The district was founded on August 29, 1834. On October 14, 1994, the eastern part of the district was separated and has since formed the newly established Alto Pichigua district . The Pichigua District has an area of 274 km². The 2017 census counted 3,016 inhabitants. Ten years earlier, the population was 3,802. The district administration is located in the town of Santa Lucía de Pichigua (also Pichigua) with 342 inhabitants (as of 2017) at an altitude of 3870 m . Santa Lucía de Pichigua is 13 km north of the provincial capital Yauri .
Geographical location
The Pichigua district is located in the Andean highlands in the north of the Espinar province. The Río Apurímac flows north along the western district boundary. Its right tributary, the Río Salado, forms the southwestern boundary of the district. The rivers Río Quesccamayo, Río Pichigua and Río Collpamayo flow through the area in a predominantly westerly direction.
The Pichigua district is bordered to the southeast by the district Alto Pichigua, in the southwest of the district Espinar , on the west by the district Coporaque , in the northwest on the district Checca , on the north by the district Kunturkanki and in the northeast on the district Layo the latter three ( Districts are in the province of Canas ).
