The Río Grande district is located in the Condesuyos Province in the Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district was established on April 23, 1965. It has an area of ​​533 km². The 2017 census counted 3567 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 4786, in 2007 it was 3430. The district administration is located in the 505  m high village of Iquipí with 296 inhabitants (as of 2017). Iquipí is located 52 km west southwest of the provincial capital Chuquibamba .

Geographical location

The Río Grande district extends over the arid plateau south of the Cordillera Volcánica in the extreme southwest of the Condesuyos province. In the south it reaches up to about 40 km to the Pacific coast . The Río Ocoña crosses the district in a south-southwest direction. Its left tributary Quebrada Chorunga crosses the northeast of the district.

The Río Grande district is bordered to the south and the southwest by the district Mariano Nicolás Valcárcel ( province Camaná ), on the west by the district Caravelí ( province Caravelí ), to the north by the district Yanaquihua and the east by the district Andaray .
