The Salamanca district is located in the Condesuyos Province in the Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It has an area of ​​1241 km². The 2017 census counted 517 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1392, in 2007 it was 1060. The district administration is located in the town of Salamanca at an altitude of 3203  m with 291 inhabitants (as of 2017). Salamanca is 42 km north-northwest of the provincial capital Chuquibamba .

Geographical location

The Salamanca district is flanked in the southwest and in the central south by the two volcanoes Solimana ( 6093  m ) and Coropuna ( 6425  m ). The longitudinal extent in SW-NE direction is 54 km, the maximum width 39 km. The Río Arma, upper reaches of the Río Chichas, crosses the district in a west-southwest direction. The area is very arid and covered with desert vegetation.

The Salamanca district is bordered to the west by the districts of Andaray , Yanaquihua and Chichas , to the northwest by the districts of Toro and Cotahuasi (both in the province of La Unión ), to the north by the districts of Tomepampa , Alca and Puyca (all three in the province of La Unión ), in the northeast to the Cayarani district and in the southeast to the Andagua , Machaguay , Viraco and Pampacolca districts (all four in the province of Castilla ).
