The district of Cotahuasi is located in the province of La Unión in the Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district was founded on June 22, 1825. It has an area of 167 km². The 2017 census counted 3,089 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 3079, in 2007 3030. The district administration is located in the provincial capital Cotahuasi at an altitude of 2683 m with 2277 inhabitants (as of 2017).
Geographical location
The district of Cotahuasi is located in the Cordillera Volcánica in the southeast of the province of La Unión. The Río Cotahuasi flows west along the northern district boundary . In the south the district extends to the 6093 m high Solimana volcano .
The Cotahuasi district borders on the Toro district in the west, the Pampamarca and Huaynacotas districts in the north, the Tomepampa district in the northeast and the Salamanca district ( Condesuyos province ) in the east .
