The Mariscal Cáceres district is located in the Camaná province in the Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district was founded on November 3, 1944. The district was named after Andrés Avelino Cáceres , a Peruvian national hero of the 19th century.

The Mariscal Cáceres district has an area of ​​593 km². The 2017 census counted 6195 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 3815, in 2007 it was 5463. The seat of the district administration is the 11  m high village of San José with 1090 inhabitants (as of 2017). San José is 2.5 km west of the provincial capital Camaná . The national road 1S ( Panamericana ) runs along the coast and crosses the district.

Geographical location

The Mariscal Cáceres district is located in the west-central part of the Camaná province. The district has about 36 km long coastline on the Pacific Ocean and extends about 25 km inland. In the extreme southeast of the district lies the mouth of the Río Camaná . Irrigated agriculture is practiced there and the settlement areas are located there and on the adjacent sea coast. Otherwise the district consists of desert and is largely uninhabited.

The Mariscal Cáceres district borders in the northwest on the Ocoña district , in the northeast on the Chuquibamba district ( Condesuyos Province ) and in the east on the Nicolás de Piérola , José María Quimper and Camaná districts .
