The Río Quilca , in the upper and middle reaches of the Río Chili , on a 75 km long section of the lower Río Vítor , is an approximately 310 km long tributary of the Pacific Ocean in southwest Peru in the Arequipa region .

River course

The headwaters of the Río Chili are located in the Cerro Colquerane in the Peruvian Western Cordillera at an altitude of about 4800  m . The upper 155 km of the Río Chili are within the Reserva nacional de Salinas y Aguada Blanca . The Río Chili initially flows 35 km to the northwest, then to the confluence of the Río Sumbay at river kilometer 232 to the west. Then the Río Chili turns south. At river kilometer 184 the Río Blanco meets the Río Chili coming from the east. The Aguada Blanca dam is located at river kilometer 175 . The Río Chili flows below the dam between the volcanoes Nevado Chachani (in the north) and Misti (in the south) to the west, later to the south-west and finally to the south. The Charcani V (135 MW), Charcani IV (15 MW), Charcani VI (9 MW), Charcani III (5 MW), Charcani I (1.8 MW) and Charcani II (0.6 MW). These use the gradient of the river. Its water is diverted to several weirs .

At river kilometer 140 the Río Chili flows through the center of Arequipa . From river kilometer 132 the river turns to the west. At river kilometer 99, the Río Yura meets the Río Chili from the right. This is called Río Vítor ( ) below the confluence . The Panamericana crosses the river at river kilometer 78 near the village of Vítor . At river kilometer 24 the Río Siguas meets the river coming from the north. This is called Río Quilca ( ) below the confluence . The Río Quilca turns for the last 20 kilometers in the south-southwest direction and reaches the Pacific coast. National road 15D crosses the river 900 m above the mouth.

Catchment area

The catchment area of the Río Quilca covers an area of ​​13,817 km², without the sub -catchment area of ​​the Río Siguas it is 12,542 km². In the west the catchment area borders on that of the Río Camaná , in the east on that of the Río Tambo .
