The Aguada Blanca dam is located on the Río Chili in southern Peru , 27 kilometers northeast of the city of Arequipa . The dam is located in the Peruvian Western Cordillera on the northeast flank of the Misti volcano . It is used to regulate flow and generate energy. The operator of the plant is Empresa de Generación Eléctrica de Arequipa SA (Egasa). The reservoir is located within the Reserva nacional de Salinas y Aguada Blanca .

Dam and reservoir

The stone rubble dam built in the 1960s is 48 m high. The crown length is 80 m. The Río Chili is dammed over a length of 6.2 km. The reservoir, located at an altitude of 3670  m , covers a maximum area of 2.2 km². Above the reservoir there are the Chalhuanca and El Frayle reservoirs at the tributaries Río Sumbay and Río Blanco .

Hydroelectric power plant

The Charcani V hydroelectric power station (Spanish: Central Hidroeléctrica Charcani V ) is located 10 km downstream from the reservoir. The cavern power plant was completed in 1988. It has three units. Each unit includes a vertically directed Pelton turbine . The total installed output is 154 MW, the effective power plant capacity is 144.6 MW. An approximately 10 km long underground water pipe leads from the reservoir to the moated castle ( ) and then via a pressure pipe to the power plant. The drop height is 706.4 m, the volume of water used is 24.9 m³ / s.
