Districts of Islay Province

The Cocachacra district is located in the Islay province in the Arequipa region in southwest Peru . The district has an area of ​​1536.96 km². The 2017 census counted 8,347 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 9,391, in 2007 9,342. The district administration is based in the small town of Cocachacra, east of the mouth of the Río Tambo , with 5,477 inhabitants (as of 2017).

The Cocachacra district is located in the northeast of Islay Province. It extends over the coastal plateau of southwest Peru and reaches up to 9 km to the Pacific coast . The river Río Tambo crosses the district initially in a westerly direction and later in a south-westerly direction. It extends about 30 km inland. The district is bordered to the south by the district Punta de Bombón , in the southwest to the districts Deán Valdivia and Mejía , the west by the district Mollendo , on the north by the province of Arequipa and the east by the province of Mariscal Nieto ( Region Moquegua ). Irrigated agriculture is practiced in the river valley of the Río Tambo, otherwise the district consists of desert. The national road 1S ( Panamericana ) from La Joya to Moquegua runs through the district.
