The Moquegua region [ moˈkeɣa ] (Spanish Región Moquegua , Quechua Muqiwa suyu ) is a region in southern Peru and borders the Pacific . 180,500 people (2015) live in an area of 15,733.97 km 2 . The capital is Moquegua .
geography
The landscape is mountainous and flat along the river valleys of the Río Tambo and Río Moquegua . The highest mountain is the Ubinas volcano with a height of 5672 meters.
The main port city is Ilo .
population
After Puno and Tacna, the Moquegua region is the region in Peru with the third highest proportion of Aymara native speakers (12.9%). The most common mother tongue in the region is Spanish (78.2%), followed by Quechua (8.7%).
