The Omate district is located in the General Sánchez Cerro Province in the Moquegua region in southwestern Peru . The district has an area of ​​255 km². The 2017 census counted 3266 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 2741, in 2007 it was 3900. The district administration is located in the provincial capital of Omate, at an altitude of 2160  m , with 1049 inhabitants (as of 2017).

Geographical location

The Omate district is located on the southern flank of the Cordillera Volcánica in the central south of the Province of General Sanchez Cerro. In the south, the district extends to the north bank of the Río Tambo, which flows west .

The district Omate bordered on the southwest by the district Puquina , the west by the district Coalaque , in the northeast on the district Matalaque , the east and the southeast by the district Quinistaquillas and in the extreme south of the district Torata ( province Mariscal Nieto ).
