The Matalaque district is located in the General Sánchez Cerro Province in the Moquegua region in southwestern Peru . The district was established on August 28, 1920. It has an area of ​​562 km². The 2017 census counted 487 residents. In 1993 the population was 729, in 2007 it was 1033. The district administration is located in the 2538  m high village of Matalaque with 197 inhabitants (as of 2017). Matalaque is located 26 km northeast of the provincial capital Omate .

Geographical location

The district of Matalaque is located on the southern flank of the Cordillera Volcánica, centrally in the province of General Sánchez Cerro. The Río Tambo flows south along the eastern district boundary.

The Matalaque district borders in the southwest on the Quinistaquillas district , in the west on the Omate and Coalaque districts , in the northwest on the San Juan de Tarucani district ( Arequipa province ), in the north on the Ubinas district , in the east on the Chojata district and in the southeast to the San Cristóbal ( Mariscal Nieto Province ).
