The Ichuña District is located in the General Sánchez Cerro Province in the Moquegua Region in southwestern Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It has an area of ​​999 km². The 2017 census counted 3,207 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 2683, in 2007 4057. The district administration is located in the 3756  m high village of Ichuña with 905 inhabitants (as of 2017). Ichuña is located 75 km northeast of the provincial capital Omate .

Geographical location

The district of Ichuña is located on the southern flank of the Cordillera Volcánica in the northeast of the province of General Sánchez Cerro. The Río Tambo crosses the district in a westerly direction.

The district of Ichuña borders in the west on the district Yunga , in the northwest on the district Cabanillas ( province San Román ), in the northeast on the districts Mañazo , Tiquillaca and San Antonio (all three in the province Puno ), in the east on the district Pichacani ( also in the province of Puno), in the south to the district of Chojata and in the south-west to the district of Lloque .
