The Cabanillas district is located in the San Román Province in the Puno region in southern Peru . The district was established on February 28, 1958. It has an area of ​​1268 km². The 2017 census counted 4644 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 4887, in 2007 it was 5180. The district administration is located in the 3885  m high village of Deustua (or Cabanillas) with 2214 inhabitants (as of 2017). Deustua is located 28 km southwest of the provincial capital Juliaca .

Geographical location

The Cabanillas district is located in the west of the province of San Román. The lengthwise extension in WSW-ONE direction is 66 km, the maximum width is 25 km. The Río Coata flows east along the northern district boundary . In the west the district reaches up to the Cordillera Volcánica .

The Cabanillas district borders in the south on the districts Ichuña and Ubinas (both in the province General Sánchez Cerro ), in the southwest on the districts San Juan de Tarucani ( province Arequipa ) and San Antonio de Chuca ( province Caylloma ), in the north on the districts Santa Lucía and Cabanilla (both in the province of Lampa ), in the northeast to the district of Cabana and in the southeast to the district of Mañazo ( province of Puno ).
