The Juliaca district is located in the San Román Province in the Puno region in southern Peru . The district emerged in the founding years of the Republic of Peru. It has an area of ​​395 km². The 2017 census counted 235,110 inhabitants. The seat of the provincial and district administration is the 3824  m high town of Juliaca with 223,022 inhabitants (as of 2017). Juliaca is located 40 km north-northwest of the regional capital Puno .

Geographical location

The Juliaca district is located in the eastern north of the San Román province, about 20 km from the northwestern shore of Lake Titicaca . The Río Coata crosses the district in a north-northeast direction.

The Juliaca district is bordered to the west by the Cabanilla and Lampa districts (both in the Lampa province ), to the north by the Calapuja district (also in the Lampa province), to the east by the San Miguel district and to the south by the Caracoto and Cabana districts .
