The Calapuja district is located in the Lampa Province in the Puno region in southern Peru . The district was founded on May 2, 1854. It has an area of 138 km². The 2017 census counted 1690 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1404, in 2007 it was 1494. The seat of the district administration is the 3843 m high village of Calapuja with 506 inhabitants (as of 2017). Calapuja is located 16.5 km east-northeast of the provincial capital Lampa .
Geographical location
The Calapuja district is located in the Andean highlands in the east of the Lampa province. The district is located in the arid desert plain northwest of Lake Titicaca . The Río Pucará crosses the district in a southeast, later in an easterly direction and flows in the east of the district into the Río Ramis (also Río Azángaro). Low ridges rise on both sides of the river.
The Calapuja district is bordered by the Lampa district to the west, the Nicasio district to the north, the Achaya and Caminaca districts to the northeast and the east (both in the Azángaro province ), and the San Miguel and Juliaca districts to the southeast and south ( both in the province of San Román ).
