Michel Pierre Antoine Laurent Agar, comte de Mosbourg (born November 19, 1824 in Paris ; † May 16, 1892 ibid) was a French diplomat .

Life

Laurent Agar de Mosbourg was the only son of the French civil servant Jean Antoine Michel Agar , the former finance and foreign minister of the Grand Duchy of Berg and finance minister of the Kingdom of Naples , from his second marriage to Alexandrine Andrée Janet (approx. 1795–1874). The hereditary title of Bergische Comte de Mosbourg (Count of Mosbourg, derived from Schloss Morsbroich ), which the father had been awarded in 1807 after marrying Grand Duke Joachim Murat's great niece Alexandrine Andrieu (1791–1811), was confirmed by the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III . as well as Louis XVIII. of France (May 11, 1816).

Agar de Mosbourg embarked on a diplomatic career. In 1849 he became secretary of the French embassy in Saint Petersburg . From 1856 to 1867 he served as first secretary of the French embassy in Vienna . From 1867 to 1870 he was in the rank of extraordinary envoy and plenipotentiary minister head of the French mission to Karlsruhe in the Grand Duchy of Baden , then until 1871 French ambassador to Austria . For his diplomatic services he was accepted as a knight in the Legion of Honor in 1857 , where he was promoted to officer in 1863 and commander in 1871.

Agar de Mosbourg was known for its bibliophilia . He collected and researched rare and valuable books, which he acquired mainly at the Hôtel Drouot . He also made a name for himself as the founder of a free school for girls (École de Saint Laurent). He died unmarried at the age of 67 as the last Comte de Mosbourg.
