The Paratía district is located in the Lampa province in the Puno region in southern Peru . The district was established on April 23, 1954. It has an area of ​​747 km². The 2017 census counted 2903 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1722, in 2007 it was 5257. The seat of the district administration is the 4390  m high village Paratía with 446 inhabitants (as of 2017). Paratía is located almost 27 km west-southwest of the provincial capital Lampa .

Geographical location

The Paratía district is centrally located in the Andean highlands in the Lampa province. In the north, the area is bounded by a mountain range over 5200  m high consisting of the peaks Quilca, Jatun Pasto, Huayquera, San Luis, Milna Punta and San Carlos. Lake Saitococha is located at the foot of the mountains. The area is drained via the Río Paratía south to the Río Coata (also Río Cabanillas).

The Paratía district is bordered to the south and the west by the district of Santa Lucia , in the northwest on the district Ocuviri , on the north by the district Palca and in the east by the district Lampa .

In addition to the main town, there are the following larger towns in the district:

  • Chilahuito (594 inhabitants)
  • Llanca (220 inhabitants)
  • Quillisani (322 inhabitants)
