Jens Salvesen, member of the Kongelig Norsk Seilforening , took part in the Olympic Games twice. In 1920 in Antwerp he won the silver medal on his Olympic debut in the 8-meter class according to the International Rule of 1919. As the skipper of the Lyn , he always finished in three races behind the second Norwegian boat Sildra and in front of the Belgian boat Antwerpia V in second place, which is why the Lyn finished the regatta in second place. The crew included Lauritz Schmidt , Nils Thomas , Ralph Tschudi and Finn Schiander . At the Olympic Games in Amsterdam in 1928 he was a crew member this time in the 8-meter class and just missed another medal win with the Noreg in fourth place.

Before his sailing career Salvesen was active in winter sports, as well as in football and tennis. In 1905 he founded a shipping company and spent eleven years in Germany, England and Russia. From 1916 he was the sole managing director of Salvesens Rederi .
