The Kongelig Norsk Seilforening (KNS) ( German Royal Norwegian Sailing Club ) is a yacht club on Bygdøy , a peninsula in the Oslofjord and a district of Oslo in Norway .
history
The club was founded on February 7, 1883 as a nationwide organization with associated local associations under the name Norsk Forening for Lystseilads (German: Norwegian Association for Sport Boats) in Oslo. On December 6, 1884, by royal resolution of King Oskar II , the members of the KNS were allowed to assign the naval flag to the Norwegian national flag with the royal insignia (crown and monogram) on a central white field in the center of the cross on board their yachts to lead. The model was the Swedish flag Kungliga Svenska Segelsällskapet . Until 1904, the club yachts had the triangular stand with the golden Nordic lion on a red background.
In 1902 the club name was changed to Kongelig Norsk Seilforening (KNS) and in 1904 the club joined together with the local Kongelig Yacht Club Kristiania (KYK). After the merger, a new stand was introduced in 1906, which was based on the KYK model: a triangular stand in blue-white-blue with the club initials and a crown in the white field.
After the dissolution of the Swedish-Norwegian Union on June 7, 1905 and the deposition of King Oscar II, the sea flag was no longer allowed to be used and the members then set the trade flag. The problem was solved by King Haakon VII's accession to the throne in 1906. The tradition of leading the sea flag by the members of the KNS with the royal monogram and crown in the center of the cross has been continued to this day.
In 1970 the club was reorganized as a yacht club for the Oslo area under a new nationwide federation of yacht clubs des Norges Seilforbund (NSF) (German: Norwegian Sailing Association). In 2016 the KNS had around 4,000 members.
In April 2015, King Harald V opened the Ulabrand sailing center of the KNS near Bygdøy. The KNS has a long tradition of training sailors in popular sport and at the highest level and has often been able to successfully send members to the Summer Olympic Games who have also won medals there.
