Magnus Andreas Thulstrup Clasen Konow (born September 1, 1887 in Stokke ( Sandefjord ), Norway , † August 25, 1972 in San Remo , Italy ) was a Norwegian sailor in various meter classes .
family
Magnus Konow was the son of Einar Konow (1859-1946) and Dagny Clasen (1864-1900). He married three times, first in 1913 to Else Nanna Grove from Denmark (1891 – xx). She was the daughter of Andreas Grove from Copenhagen (1856–1939) and Caroline Louise Frederikke Anette Ewald (born 1869). They had three children together: the daughter Henny Else (1914–1999), later married to Ragnar Hargreaves; the daughter Vera Alexandra (1916–2009), later married to Lars Skage Musæus, and the son Karsten Magnus (1918–1945). He later married Iselin Danelius (February 9, 1915 - March 16, 1939) from Bergen , Norway. This was a short marriage. His third marriage to Olga Rapaport (1913–2002) lasted to the end. They had a son, Magnus Einar Konow (* 1948).
Professional background
After graduating from high school, he began training in papermaking, then went to Buenos Aires to set up an import business. He came back to Norway and ran an import-export business in Oslo. He was successful as the co-founder and owner of A / S Rosshavet in Sandefjord, which had a license to hunt whales in the Antarctic Ross Sea . He also took part in whaling expeditions and shot various whales himself. During the Second World War , Konow emigrated to the United States of America and became an American.
Sporting successes
He participated in six Olympic Games and won two gold medals and one silver medal. In the Olympic sailing competitions, in which he did not win a medal, he reached at least fourth place.
Six Olympic participations
- 1908 Summer Olympics in London (venue: Solent before Ryde ). Magnus Konow was a crew member on the Norwegian yacht Fram in the 8-meter class under the skipper Johan Anker . The yacht reached number 4 .
- 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm (venue: Nynäshamn ). Four years later, as a crew member on the Norwegian 12-meter yacht Magda IX, he again won the gold medal in the 12-meter class with skipper Johan Anker .
- 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp (venue: North Sea off Oostende ). He won his second gold medal as a crew member on the Norwegian yacht Sildra in the 8 meter class .
- 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam (venue: Zuiderzee ). In his fourth Olympic Games he took part as a team member on the Norwegian yacht Noreg , which finished the regattas in fourth place in the 8-meter class .
- 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin (venue: Kiel ). Magnus Konow won his third medal as skipper and helmsman on the Norwegian yacht Lully II . His son Karsten Konow was a crew member at the regatta. They won the silver medal in the 6-meter class with just one point less than the gold medal winner Great Britain.
- 1948 Summer Olympics in London (venue: Torquay ). Magnus Konow sailed his sixth Olympic Games as the skipper and helmsman of the Norwegian yacht Apache . His two sons-in-law Ragnar Hargreaves and Lars Skage Musæus were crew members. They finished the regatta in fourth place in the 6-meter class .
Magnus Konow is one of only four athletes who have participated in the Olympic Games over a period of 40 years, along with Danish fencer Ivan Osiier and the two sailors Paul Elvstrøm from Denmark and Durward Knowles from the Bahamas .
One Ton Cup
Magnus Konow won the One-Ton-Cup four times as the skipper and helmsman of Norwegian yachts, most recently in 1957 at the age of 70.

Other sporting activities
As a student he became a member of the sailing club Kongelig Norsk Seilforening (KNS) (German: Royal Norwegian Yacht Club) in 1907 and was later a member of the board and from 1937 to 1940 deputy chairman. He promoted many technical innovations in sailing. As a young man Konow was active in the sports of ski jumping and rowing .
