Ivan Joseph Martin Osiier (born December 16, 1888 in Copenhagen ; † September 23, 1965 there ) was a successful Danish sport fencer .

Sporting successes

With participation in seven Olympic Games , Osiier is one of the athletes with the most Olympic appearances . Two world wars and his non-participation in the 1936 Games interrupted his career and prevented an even higher number of participants.

Osiier started in all three Olympic branches, i.e. with the foil, epee and saber. He began his Olympic career at the 1908 Olympic Games in London . Four years later he won at the games in Stockholm 's only Olympic medal. In the epee competition he was only defeated by the Belgian Paul Anspach .

After the First World War, Osiier returned to the Olympic competitions and achieved several top positions close behind the medal ranks. Ivan Osiier did not start at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. As an athlete of Jewish origin, he protested against the persecution of Jews in National Socialist Germany.

At the Olympic Games in 1948 Osiier completed his career with the seventh participation.

Ivan Osiier became 25 times Danish champion in fencing and won 13 Scandinavian championship titles. Before he turned to fencing, he was also successful as a rower .

Private

Ivan Osiier was married to the Danish fencer Ellen Osiier (1890–1962). Ellen Osiier became Olympic champion in 1924 .

Honors

Osiier was inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame .
