Paul Bert Elvstrøm (born February 25, 1928 in Hellerup ; † December 7, 2016 there ) was a Danish sailor and the most successful regatta sailor to date , measured by world championship titles and Olympic medals.

Greatest successes

Paul Elvstrøm took part in the Olympic Games eight times from 1948 to 1988 , making him one of the athletes with the most Olympic participations to this day . In the first four participations he won the gold medal four times in a discipline, which has only happened four times in history (most recently Carl Lewis in the long jump 1984-1996). At the 1968 Olympic Games off Acapulco , he narrowly missed a medal in the Star Boat and also in 1984 off Los Angeles when he competed in the Olympic catamaran Tornado with his youngest daughter Trine (4th place). He ended his regatta career after the Olympic Games of 1988 , in which he took part in the tornado with his daughter Trine (15th place).

Other sailing activities

Elvstrøm also tried to take part in the America's Cup , but revolutionized the technology of his 12-meter sailing yacht to such an extent that his sponsor, Baron Marcel Bich (France I) from France, wanted to introduce changes. Elvstrøm gave up his project because he did not want to compromise.

Elvstrøm is known as a constructor and designer of boats and sailing accessories and has set up his own company Elvstrøm Sails based in Aabenraa ( Aabenraa ). The company has a red three-pointed crown as its logo. The double Olympic champion Jesper Bank now works at Elvstrøm Sails as Finance Director. He mastered the Finn dinghy boat class in the 1950s and brought many technical innovations and new training methods (for example targeted strength training) to dinghy sailing.

As a sailor in the Finn dinghy class, Elvstrøm developed what is known as suspension technology in sailing. In the pioneering days of ambitious dinghy sailing, he trained the technique at home in his garage in Hellerup. The hanging technology revolutionized dinghy sailing and is now the norm in all dinghy classes.

Together with the Danish yacht designer Jan Kjaerulff, Elvstrøm designed the fast, light and sporty-slim yacht Aphrodite 101 (client: Jörgen Juul Rasmussen [DK]), which was very successful. While Kjaerulff designed the hull shape, Elvstrøm designed the deck layout, the fitting arrangement and the rig . Furthermore, the invented Elvstrøm Elvström-ratchet block and the self-bailer (engl. Self bailer), both widely used today, and the regatta life jacket , now an integral part of the equipment of each competition glider.

He also passed on his sailing knowledge in books, in particular on sailing tactics and rules for regatta sailing.

Paul Elvstrøm was a member of the Hellerup Sejlklub and most recently lived in Hellerup near Copenhagen in Denmark . He struggled with Alzheimer's disease in the last few years of his life and fell asleep quietly in his home on December 7, 2016 at the age of 88.
