Iain Percy

Iain Bryden Percy , OBE (born March 21, 1976 in Southampton , Hampshire ) is a British sailor . As a two-time Olympic champion , he is one of the most successful British Olympic sailors. Percy was also a member of the British America's Cup team in 2005 .

Percy started for the first time at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney and immediately took first place in the Finn dinghy at the Olympic Sailing Shore in Rushcutters Bay . He received the gold medal in a solemn ceremony on the steps of the Sydney Opera House .

At the next Games in Athens in 2004 , he started in the open two-man star boat and took sixth place with Steve Mitchell in the Agios Kosmas Olympic sailing center , located between the Faliro Coastal Zone Olympic Sports Complex and Glyfada . The same team won the bronze medal at the 2005 World Sailing Championships and the gold medal at the European Sailing Championships in the same year.

At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing , Iain Percy started again in the star class, this time with a new partner, Andrew Simpson . The team won the gold medal at the Qingdao International Sailing Center .

At the 2012 Summer Olympics in Great Britain , both won a silver medal in the same boat class . Between them they won the Star boat in Rio de Janeiro , the World Cup of 2010.

Percy is a member and trains regularly at the Hayling Island Sailing Club (HISC) in Sandy Point on Hayling Island , an island off the south coast of England. He was also a member of the 2005 crew that took part in the UK's 2005 Louis Vuitton Cup , the qualifying event for the America's Cup .

Honors

In recognition of his first Olympic gold medal, Percy was named Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2005 and Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2009 after his second Olympic victory.
