Olympic Sailing Center Agios Kosmas

In the Olympic Sailing Center Agios Kosmas ( Greek Ολυμπιακό Κέντρο Ιστιοπλοΐας Αγίου Κοσμά Olymbiako Kendro Istioploias Agiou Kosma ) the sailing competitions at the 2004 Summer Olympics and the 2004 Summer Paralympics took place in Athens . After the competitions, the center was expanded to become one of the largest and most luxurious marinas on the Mediterranean under the name Agios Kosmas Marina .

Location and 2004 Summer Games

The regatta port is located in the Athens suburb of Elliniko in southern Attica on the coast of the Saronic Gulf . To the north is the Faliro Coastal Zone Olympic Sports Complex and south to the coastal town of Glyfada , one of the most elegant suburbs of Athens . The distance from the sailing center to Athens city center is 12 kilometers and to the Olympic Village is 35 kilometers. In August 2002 and August 2003 the Greek authorities successfully carried out test events in the newly established sailing center. The entire facility comprised 336,289 m². Construction work was completed on January 31, 2004. The official opening took place on August 2, 2004, 11 days before the start of the games. At the award ceremony, 1,600 spectators found space on a temporary grandstand.

In the sailing regattas of the 2004 Olympic Games , medals were awarded in a total of 11 competitions: in four men's classes ( Finn dinghy , 470 dinghy , Star , windsurfing (Mistral) ), four women's classes ( Europe , 470 dinghy , Yngling , windsurfing (Mistral) ) and three mixed classes ( laser , 49er dinghy , tornado ). Post-Olympic use

As Agios Kosmas Marina , the post-Olympic use center was developed into one of the most attractive locations for leisure and tourism in the Athens coastal region. In the final stage, which should be completed in 2009, the marina will have a total area of ​​424,868 m², a development area of 16,423 m² and a living area of ​​8,945 m². The facilities include offices, multi-purpose halls for culture and sports, a restaurant by the sea, a canteen, a snack bar, medical facilities, a gas station and a parking area for 1000 vehicles. The center also has 30 luxurious rooms and meeting rooms. In addition, the site is to be expanded to include a nature park .
