The Olympic Velodrome

The Athens Olympic Velodrome ( Greek Ολυμπιακό Ποδηλατοδρόμιο ) is a cycling track in the Athens Olympic Sports Complex in the suburb of Marousi of the Greek capital Athens. At the 2004 Summer Olympics , the velodrome was the venue for the track cycling competitions.

description

The cycle track is 250 meters long, is made of the African hardwood Afzelia and has a curve superelevation of 42 degrees. The track was designed by the Australian racetrack architect Ron Webb , and the roof over the track was designed by the Spaniard Santiago Calatrava . The velodrome can accommodate more than 5000 spectators.

Before the 2004 Olympic Games, the track was renovated and given a roof. The construction was glazed in 2006 to make the use more independent of the weather. Since then it has been a closed hall.

history

Before the construction of today's velodrome, the old cycling track was on the site of the Karaiskakis stadium , which had to make way for extensions there. Therefore, in the late 1980s, a new velodrome was built on the Olympic sports complex.

The building was opened on the occasion of the Mediterranean Games in 1991 and was originally called Velodrome Konstantinidis , named after the Greek cyclist Aristidis Konstantinidis , the first modern Olympic champion in 1896 .

In 1995, 1996 and 1997 races of the Track Cycling World Cup took place here, in 1992 and 1999 the UCI Track World Championships for Juniors and in 2015 the UEC Track European Championships for Juniors / U23 2015 . The national track championships take place here every year.
