Athens and surroundings

Olympic Sports Complex Athens

The Olympic Sports Complex Athens ( Greek Ολυμπιακό Αθλητικό Κέντρο Αθήνας , Olympiako Athlitiko Kentro Athinon , also OAKA for short ), which bears the name of the first Olympic marathon winner Spyridon Louis , was partially rebuilt for the Olympic Games according to a design by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava . The complex is located in the Athens suburb of Marousi , ten kilometers northeast of the city center and 14.5 kilometers from the Olympic Village . Five competition venues are combined in the complex.

Central Olympic Stadium

The Olympic Stadium was built in 1980 and served as a venue for major events even before the Olympic Games. It was rebuilt in advance for 156 million euros.

The Olympic Stadium was the venue for the athletics competitions and the final of the soccer tournament, as well as the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies.

Water sports center

The water sports center was built in 1991 and consists of two outdoor pools and one covered pool. It was the venue for the water polo games, the swimming competitions and competitions in diving .

Ano Liossia Olympic Hall

The competitions in judo and wrestling took place in the Ano Liossia Olympic Hall, which seats 10,000 spectators . The hall is located 25 km northwest of the city center and its distance to the Olympic Village was 17 km away. The construction costs amounted to 71.3 million euros.

The entire complex is over 35,000 square meters in size with all rooms including warm-up facilities, relaxation rooms and administration.

Faliro Coastal Zone Olympic Sports Complex

The Faliro Coastal Zone Olympic Sports Complex is located about ten kilometers from Athens on the coast. It was built together with a marina and a promenade and consists of three competition venues.

Sports Pavilion

  • The badminton competitions as well as the shooting and fencing competitions of the modern pentathlon took place in the Goudi Olympic Hall . The audience capacity is 4,100 (badminton) or 3,000 (modern pentathlon).
  • The three remaining modern pentathlon competitions, i.e. swimming, show jumping and cross-country skiing, took place in the Olympic Modern Pentathlon Center . The spectator capacity is 2,500 for swimming and 5,000 for riding and running.

Elliniko Olympic Complex

The Elliniko Olympic Complex is a sports center in the Athens suburb of Elliniko. It is 36.2 kilometers from the Olympic Village and is located on an old airport site. The complex consists of five sports facilities.

Indoor arena and fencing hall

The preliminary round games in basketball and the final round games in handball were held in the indoor arena, and the fencing competitions were held in the fencing hall. The systems were completed on May 31, 2004 and cost around 80 million euros.

Olympic Baseball Center

Two baseball fields were built for ten million euros and only opened one day before the opening of the Olympic Games.

Olympic Softball Stadium

Olympic Hockey Center

The field hockey center built for the Olympic Games includes two hockey stadiums and a training field. It opened on August 11, 2004.

Nikea Olympic Hall

Weightlifting competitions, a very popular sport in Greece, took place in the Nikea Olympic Hall . The hall is located in the southwestern suburb of Nikea , eight kilometers from the city center. The distance to the Olympic Village was 29.5 kilometers. The hall offers space for 5,100 spectators and cost 39 million euros.

According to the organizing committee, the Nikea Olympic Hall is the only pure weightlifting hall in the world.

Panathinaikon Stadium

The Panathinaikon Stadium is the Olympic stadium for the first modern Olympic Games and is located in the center of Athens. Archery competitions took place here; the two marathons also ended here.

Peristeri Olympic Boxing Hall

The boxing competitions took place in the Peristeri Olympic Boxing Hall . The hall is located in the north-western suburb of Peristeri , which is eight kilometers from the center of Athens. The Olympic Village was 18 kilometers away. The hall offers space for 8,000 spectators.

Vouliagmeni Olympic Center

The triathlon competitions and the cycling time trial took place at the Vouliagmeni Olympic Center. The distance from the center to Athens is 20 kilometers and the Olympic Village is 45 kilometers. The Olympic Center consisted of a provisional grandstand for 3,600 spectators and the transition area for the triathletes. The actual race track in Vouliagmeni , a suburb of Athens to the south , was freely accessible.

Athens city center / cycling course

The cycling course was located in the center of Athens and was 28.5 km from the Olympic Village.

The road bike races for men and women took place here. The circuit led through the city center past important sights (including the Parliament , the Acropolis and the Agora ). The start and finish were opposite the town hall on Kotzia Square.

The distance to the Olympic Village was 43 km. The area is 94 hectares and includes grandstands, training fields and stables for 300  horses .

The audience capacity was 15,000 for the military, 10,000 for show jumping and 8,100 for dressage . 181 million euros were invested in the equestrian center.

656  olive trees had to give way to the new riding center. The trees were not felled, but dug up and replanted at other Olympic competition sites.

Markopoulo Olympic Shooting Center

In the Markopoulo Olympic Shooting Center, the competitions were in Shooting place. The shooting center was inaugurated on the occasion of the World Championships in April 2004 and is located south of Athens' Eleftherios Venizelos Airport. The shooting ranges are housed in four buildings, with a total of 4,000 spectators.

Parnitha Olympic Mountain Bike Venue

The Parnitha Olympic Mountain Bike Venue is a wooded area on Mount Parnitha 35 km away from Athens and 7.5 km from the Olympic Village. The mountain bike competitions took place on the 100 hectare site . It is located in the western suburb of Acharnes .

Schinias Olympic Rowing and Canoeing Center

The competitions in rowing and canoeing were held in the Schinias Olympic Rowing and Canoeing Center . It is located east of the city of Marathon and can seat 14,000 spectators.
