Ronald Erik "Sura-Pelle" Pettersson (born April 16, 1935 in Surahammar , † March 6, 2010 in Gothenburg ) was a Swedish ice hockey player and coach . He was also successful as a soccer player .

Career

Ronald Pettersson began his career as an ice hockey player in his hometown at Surahammars IF , for whose professional team he was active from 1952 to 1955 in Division 1 , the then highest Swedish league, and the second-rate Division 2 . He then moved to Södertälje SK , with whom he immediately won the national championship title in the 1955/56 season. He himself received the gold puck as Sweden's best player in 1960 . After five years he left Södertälje and played from 1960 to the end of his career in 1968 for the Swedish champions with Västra Frölunda IF , with whom he was also Swedish champions in the 1964/65 season . His shirt number 14 has been banned by Frölunda HC and is no longer given to any other player.

After the end of his active career, Pettersson worked, among other things, as national coach for the Swedish national team and the national team of Norway . In 2004 he was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame .

International

For Sweden , Pettersson took part in the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo , 1960 in Squaw Valley and 1964 in Innsbruck . At the 1964 Winter Games, he and his team won the silver medal. He was also in his country's squad at the World Championships in 1955 , 1957 , 1958 , 1959 , 1961 , 1962 , 1963 , 1965 , 1966 and 1967 . At the 1965 World Cup he and his team won the bronze medal, the silver medal at the 1963 and 1967 World Championships, and the gold medal at the 1957 and 1962 World Championships. As the best European team, Sweden also won the World Cup in 1957 and 1962.

In the 1960 season , Pettersson completed 13 games in the Fotbollsallsvenskan , the top Swedish division in football , for IFK Gothenburg .
