The 1955/56 season was the twelfth season of Division 1 as the highest Swedish ice hockey division . Champion was for the sixth time in the history of the Södertälje SK . Surahammars IF and IFK Norrköping relegated to the second division.

In the main round, the league was divided into two groups (North and South). Each of the six teams per group played a total of ten games. The first two in each group qualified for the final round, in which the champions were played. The last placed in each group were relegated directly to the second division. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
