The 1970/71 season was the 27th season of Division 1 as the highest Swedish ice hockey division . Brynäs IF became champions for the sixth time in the club's history . Heffners / Ortvikens IF , Skellefteå AIK , Västerås IK and Fagersta AIK were relegated to the second division.

In the main round, the league was divided into two groups (North and South). Each of the eight teams per group played a total of 14 games. The four best-placed teams in each group qualified for the final round, in which the champions were played. The last four in each group had to compete in a relegation round, with both groups conducting their own relegation round. The last two placed in each relegation round were relegated to the second division. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
