The 1956/57 season was the 13th season of Division 1 as the highest Swedish ice hockey division . The Gävle GIK became champions for the first time in the club's history . Hammarby IF , Brynäs IF , UoIF Matteuspojkarna and BK Star were relegated to the second division.

In the main round, the league was divided into two groups (North and South). Each of the eight teams per group played a total of 14 games. The first two in each group qualified for the final round, in which the champions were played. The last two in each group were relegated directly to the second division. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
