The 1979/80 Elitserien season was the fifth season of the Swedish Elitserien . Swedish champions were for the tenth time in the club's history of Brynäs IF , while the newly promoted HV71 was relegated directly back to the second division.
Regular season
mode
The ten teams of the Elitserien initially played against each other in 36 season games. While the first four teams qualified for the play-offs, the last placed rose directly to Division I and the penultimate had to compete against the best second division teams in the Kvalserien to stay up. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
