Jörgen Pettersson (born July 11, 1956 in Gothenburg ) is a former Swedish ice hockey player who played in the National Hockey League from 1973 to 1991 for the St. Louis Blues , Hartford Whalers and Washington Capitals, among others .
Career
Jörgen Pettersson began his career as an ice hockey player in his hometown at Västra Frölunda , for whose professional team he was active from 1973 to 1980 - first in Division 1 and from the 1975/76 season in the newly founded Elitserien . In the 1979/80 season the winger was runner-up with his team and failed with Västra Frölunda only in the playoff final in the best-of-five series with 2-3 wins at Brynäs IF . On May 8, 1980 he signed a contract as a free agent with the St. Louis Blues , where he was a regular player in the National Hockey League from 1980 to 1985 . During this period, he was also always one of the best point collectors on his team.
The 1985/86 season began Pettersson with the Hartford Whalers in the NHL, but moved in December 1985 to his league rivals Washington Capitals . Although he was also able to convince at the Capitals and scored nine goals and provided 18 assists in a total of 55 games, the left-handed shooter decided to return to his hometown club Västra Frölunda, which had since been relegated to Division 1, which is now second class. In the 1988/89 season he succeeded with Västra Frölunda the return to the Elitserien, in which he was another year for the club on the ice. The 1990/91 season began the former national player at Västra Frölunda in the Elitserien, but after just one game he decided to move to second division Hanhals IF , where he ended his career at the end of the season at the age of 35.
In his honor, Frölunda HC no longer awards its jersey number 19.
International
For Sweden , Pettersson took part in the junior division of the U19 European Junior Championship in 1975 and the U20 World Junior Championship in 1976 . At the U19 European Championship in 1975 he won the bronze medal with his team. In the senior sector he was in his country's squad for the Canada Cup in 1981 and the 1983 World Cup .
