The 2015/16 season was the 41st season of the Svenska Hockeyligan . The main round began on September 16, 2015 and ended on March 8, 2016. The subsequent play-offs took place in March and April 2016. It was the third season since the name change from Elitserien to Svenska Hockeyligan. The championship was determined for the first time among 14 teams. Last year's relegated Leksands IF was replaced by the newcomer Karlskrona HK and the returnees Malmö Redhawks and Rögle BK , who secured promotion in the relegation . The Swedish champions were Frölunda HC , who won the title again after eleven years and defeated Skellefteå AIK with 4-1 victories in the play-off final . In the meantime, MODO Hockey was relegated to HockeyAllsvenskan for the first time in its club history .

Main round

mode

The 14 clubs played a double round with 52 games per club. The best six teams qualified directly for the play-off quarter-finals, the teams in positions 7 to 10 play out two further play-off participants in best-of-three series. The other play-off series were played in Best of Seven mode.

Each team receives three points for a win in regular time. If there is a tie after regular time, extra time is played in which the winner receives two points and the loser one point. After a draw there is a shootout after the five-minute extension . Each team initially has three shooters, then in the event of a tie the knockout system continues. There are no points for a loss in regular time.

For the teams in positions eleven and twelve, the season is over after the main round, during which the last two players play against the two representatives from the second-rate HockeyAllsvenskan in the relegation for their place in the league.
