Janne Tapani Pesonen (* 11. May 1982 in Suomussalmi ) is a Finnish ice hockey player who, since July 2017 the Vaxjo Lakers in the Swedish Svenska Hockey Ligan on the position of left winger plays.
Career
Pesonen began his ice hockey career in the Hokki Kajaani youth program near his birthplace, Suomussalmi . During the 1998/99 season, the then 16-year-old exceptional talent was used in two games for the first time in the senior squad of his training club in the third highest Finnish league, the Suomi-sarja . For the following season Pesonen switched to the youth system of the SM-liiga club Kärpät Oulu , for which he played the following three seasons in Finland's U18 and U20 junior classes and prepared specifically for his professional career.
After the left wingers already in the 2001/02 season had come to his first nine professional appearances in the squad Oulu, while two hits had achieved, he joined in the summer of 2002 returned to Kajaani, which is now in the Mestis second highest, Finland league, had risen. For his home club he scored 36 points in 40 encounters in the 2002/03 season and was instrumental in staying up and qualifying for the playoffs. For the 2003/04 season , the Finn returned to Oulu and was henceforth part of the regular first team. In his rookie season , in which he was also able to celebrate his first championship win with the team, Pesonen collected 30 scorer points in the 56 games of the main round , which earned him the Jarmo Wasama commemorative trophy for the best league newcomer of the year . After the season he was finally selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2004 in the ninth round in 269th position by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim with their last right to vote. In the following season, the Finn was not able to increase his offensive production, but defended the title win of the previous year with Oulu. The following year 2005/06 was even worse for him personally and for the team. Again, his statistics on the offensive deteriorated and the team could not win the third championship title in a row, despite the big favorite position, but failed in the playoff semifinals and had to be content with third place. Only in the 2006/07 season did the striker return to his former strength. With 55 scorer points in 56 games, he set a new personal record and led Kärpät Oulu as top scorer to first place in the table after the main round. He also remained indispensable for his team in the subsequent playoffs and was Finnish champion with Oulu for the third time . In addition to being elected to the All-Star Team of the SM-liiga for the first time, he was also awarded the Jari-Kurri trophy for the best player in the playoffs. Another increase recorded Pesonen in the 2007/08 season , when he was able to win his fourth championship title in the last five years. After 78 points in 56 games, he was honored with numerous trophies and reelection to the league's all-star team. However, while things went above average for him on a national level, Pesonen received little attention internationally and there were no successes either. In January 2008, Oulu failed - as in 2005 and 2006 when the team lost in the final - again when attempting the European Champions Cup .
Nevertheless, Pesonen had become interesting through his performances for the North American National Hockey League , which made him one of the most sought-after players in Europe for the NHL teams in the summer of 2008, alongside his compatriot Ville Leino and Swede Fabian Brunnström . Since the team that had drafted him, now renamed Anaheim Ducks , had not brought people to sign the contract in the past four years, the latter was considered a free agent and was free to choose from among the 30 teams interested. After Leino decided to work with the Detroit Red Wings and Brunnström with the Dallas Stars , the striker finally signed a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins on July 7th . The Penguins, already equipped with strikers Sidney Crosby and Yevgeny Malkin , could not keep him in the NHL squad after the pre-season because of a possible exceeding of the salary cap . Therefore, he was initially posted to the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins , Pittsburgh's farm team in the American Hockey League . After good performance there, he was first ordered into the NHL squad on October 31 and made his league debut a day later. Due to the problem of exceeding the upper salary limit, the now 26-year-old was sent back to the AHL a little later. In total, he played only seven NHL games and played mainly for Wilkes-Barre / Scranton. Thanks to his 82 points from 70 games, he was voted into the Second All-Star Team of the AHL.
In the summer of 2009 Pesonen left the Penguins and joined the reigning Russian champion Ak Bars Kazan from the Continental Hockey League , with whom he also won the Gagarin Cup in the 2009/10 season . In August 2011, he received a trial contract with the Winnipeg Jets NHL team . There he could not assert himself in the training camp and in October 2011 he switched to the reigning Finnish champion HIFK Helsinki . For the HIFK he then completed over 40 games in the SM-liiga, in which he collected 29 scorer points, and returned to Ak Bars Kazan in June 2012. At Ak Bars he was one of the top performers in the following years and was therefore assistant captain of the team in the 2013/14 season. In December 2014 he left Ak Bars and was signed by Skellefteå AIK shortly before the end of the year , with whom he reached the Swedish runner-up at the end of the season.
In August 2016 Pesonen was awarded a contract for seven weeks by HC Ambrì-Piotta from the Swiss National League A (NLA). The agreement contained the possibility of an extension until the end of the 2016/17 season , which was then used.
In July 2017 Pesonen was transferred to the Växjö Lakers in the Swedish Svenska Hockeyligan . He won the Swedish championship with the Lakers in 2018 .
International
Pesonen, who had never played internationally in the junior division, was appointed to the Finnish B selection for the first time in the 2002/03 season. Since 2003 he has been taking part in the Euro Hockey Tour with the Finnish national team, which he won with his team in the 2003/04, 2009/10 and 2013/14 seasons. In 2011 he was nominated for the Finnish squad for the first time at a world championship and immediately won the world title with his team. Also in 2012 , 2013 , 2015 and 2018 he played with the Finns in the top division of the world championships.
