Career

Finland (2000-2008)

Ville Leino began his career in 2000 with his hometown club SaPKo Savonlinna . He initially played for the youth team in the second Finnish junior league, but in his first year he also made two appearances in the senior squad in the third-class Suomi-sarja . In two years with the SaPKo juniors, he was able to prove his scoring qualities when he scored 50 goals and contributed 48 assists in a total of 45 games. But he was also able to make a good impression on the seniors with twelve points in 17 games.

In 2002 Leino moved to Ilves Tampere and played in the first-class SM-liiga in the 2002/03 season . He scored once in 23 games and prepared a goal. At the same time he also played for the first and second team of the Ilves Juniors. 2003/04 was finally a permanent member of the professional squad and only missed two league games. Leino developed significantly compared to the previous season and came up with 24 scorer points. The following year, however, his performance stagnated and he ended the season with five points less.

For the 2005/06 season , Leino moved to HPK Hämeenlinna , where he immediately made a significant leap in performance and rose to become an important performer within the team. In his first year he was the best scorer of his team with 43 points and took tenth place in the scorer list of the SM-liiga. In addition, he was the fifth best preparer of the season with 31 assists. He was also able to build on his good form in the playoffs and led the team to win the Finnish championship as HPK's best playoff scorer .

With eleven goals and 29 assists, Leino showed similar good performances in the 2006/07 season as in the previous season. And in the playoffs he was again one of the top performers at HPK, but the team failed already in the semifinals to Jokerit Helsinki , with whom Leino signed a contract after the end of the season. In addition, he reached the final of the IIHF European Champions Cup with HPK , where the team was clearly defeated by the Russian representative Ak Bars Kazan with 0: 6.

In 2007/08 , Leino finally developed into a leading top player within the SM-liiga. With 28 goals he took third place on the top scorer list, was the best assists in the league with 49 assists and was only one point behind Janne Pesonen in second place on the scorer list . Jokerit finished the regular season in third place, but in the first round of the playoffs the team had to fight hard for a place in the semifinals, where they should meet the Espoo Blues . Jokerit was already leading in the semi-finals in the best-of-seven series against the Blues 3-1 and was already close to the second finals in a row, but Espoo turned the series with three wins in a row and Jokerit could only get into the game to collect the bronze medal, but where they lost to Tappara . As in the regular season, Leino took second place on the scorer list in the playoffs and was awarded the Lasse-Oksanen trophy as the best player in the main round and the Kultainen kypärä as the best player of the entire season.

North America (2008-2014)

In the meantime, the North American teams had noticed him and in May 2008, the Detroit Red Wings from the NHL signed him for a year. A few months later he was able to bring convincing performances in the Red Wings training camp, but was initially sent to the AHL , where he is supposed to get used to the North American style of play at the Grand Rapids Griffins . Leino was the top scorer of the Griffins at the start of the season, but stumbled in the meantime and was then again an important support for the team with constant performances. On January 31, 2009, he finally made his debut in the NHL against the Washington Capitals and contributed a hit. Leino also convinced in the following games with a total of nine points in 13 games, but was sent back to the AHL in early March, where he reached the second round of the playoffs with the Griffins and contributed 13 points in 10 games. After the elimination, he was called up for the second time to the Red Wings, where he was used for a few games in the finals when they advanced to the Stanley Cup finals, but failed there because of the Pittsburgh Penguins .

In the summer of 2009, the Red Wings extended his contract by two years and he got a regular place in the NHL squad. However, he could not live up to expectations, so that he was even put on the stands for several games, although up to three other regular attackers were missing injured. When the return of the injured Johan Franzén was announced in early February 2010 , Leino was finally transferred to the Philadelphia Flyers so that the Red Wings' salary cap is not exceeded. On July 1, 2011, Leino signed a six-year contract with the Buffalo Sabers . Following the 2013/14 season, the Sabers bought themselves out of the three-year contract, so he was looking for a new employer as an unrestricted free agent .

Return to Europe (since 2014)

In October 2014 he was signed by the KHL Medveščak Zagreb from the KHL and completed 28 games for the club, in which he collected 15 points. In February 2015 it was handed over to the Kloten Flyers . He returned to the KHL in July 2015 when he signed a contract with Dinamo Riga . After his contract in Riga was terminated in December 2015, Leino moved to Sweden a month later and joined Växjö Lakers Hockey from Svenska Hockeyligan , where he ended his career in October 2017.
