Raimund von Zur Mühlen (born November 10, 1854 in Gut Neu-Tennasilm ( Uusna ) near Fellin (Viljandi) in what is now Estonia ; † December 9, 1931 in Steyning , Sussex , England ) was a German singer ( tenor ) and singing teacher. His song interpretations are legendary.

Life

Raimund von Zur Mühlen was a student of Auguste Hohenschild , Felix Schmidt , Adolf Schulze , Julius Stockhausen and Clara Schumann . He made his debut in 1878, together with Hans Schmidt in Riga . As a result, he continuously worked on expanding his singing possibilities, including: a. with Manuel Garcia , Beniamino Carelli , Jenny Lind , Romain Bussine and Pauline Viardot .

He is considered the founder of the independent concert genre of song recitals. His song interpretations and his lessons specializing in song interpretation were of great importance for the development of the independent subject of song singing .

By Johannes Brahms , the statement was made "Finally, finally I found my singer!" With Clara Schumann he designed Schumann -Liederabende. It also paved the way for him to London , where he gave his first concert in 1883. In 1907 he moved to England with residences in London and Steyning. His last stay in Germany is said to have been in Berlin in 1913/1914, where he gave a master class . It was here that he last met Monika Hunnius , writer and singing teacher, who regularly supported him in conducting his singing courses at Fellin Castle and in Neuhäuser between 1904 and 1911 , and with whom he had a deep friendship.

His valuable collection of documents, music and art objects was destroyed in a major fire in his property in Steyning in 1930.

Werner Bergengruen sets him a literary monument in "Lombard Elegy".
